<p>Umiam Lake  is a reservoir located in the hills 15 km to the North of Shillong in the state of Meghalaya, India. It was created by damming the Umiam river in the early 1960s. The principal catchment area of the lake and dam is spread over 220 square km.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Umiam Dam, which impounds the lake, was built by the Assam State Electricity Board in the early 1960s. The dam&#39;s original purpose was to store water for hydroelectric power generation. The Umiam Stage I powerhouse, located north of the lake, has four 9-MW turbine-generators, which entered commercial operation in 1965. Umiam Stage I was the first reservoir-storage hydroelectric project commissioned in the northeastern region of India. (Umtru Hydroelectric Project, a run-of-river project with an original capacity of 8.4 MW, began operation in 1957.) Three more stages of the Umiam Project were subsequently built downstream.</p><br>
<h2>Tourist destination</h2><br>
<p>The lake serves as a major tourist attraction for the state of Meghalaya. It is also a popular destination for water sport and adventure facilities. Tourists visit this spot for kayaking, water cycling, scooting and boating.</p><br>
<h2>Ecological effect</h2><br>
<p>Apart from storing water for electricity generation, the lake also provides numerous ecosystem services at micro, meso and macro levels. Downstream irrigation, fisheries and drinking water cater to local anthropogenic needs.</p><br>
<h2>Toxic threat and silting</h2><br>
<p>Due to the rising population of Shillong which is situated upstream of the lake, the lake is starting to become highly polluted.</p><br>
<p>Also, there is the heavy problem of silting. An estimated 40,000 cubic metres of silt enter Umiam Lake every year. Causes range between upstream encroachments, deforestation, blockage of natural drainage systems and unscientific mining et al. in the catchment area. Excessive silt load in the lake has lowered the storage.</p><br>
<p>The Third River, also known as the Yantecaw River , is the third  main tributary of the Passaic River in Passaic and Essex Counties, New Jersey in the United States.</p><br>
<p>The river originates in the Great Notch Reservoir in Woodland Park, New Jersey. It then runs through the towns of Little Falls, Clifton and Montclair. It then goes into Clifton a second time, runs through Bloomfield, through the grounds of the Upper Montclair Country Club, and then the Glen Ridge Country Club. After this, it runs by Bloomfields North Middle School where it forms Clarks Pond which is used by the schools science classes to help teach biology. It then passes through Bloomfields Brookside Park which was the location of a mill in the Colonial Period. It also passes next to Foley Field which is used by the Bloomfield High School football team and the towns little league baseball teams. The river then runs through multiple parks in the town of Nutley in Essex County. It enters the Passaic River in Clifton just north of the border with Nutley.</p><br>
<p>The Cima Dome & Volcanic Field National Natural Landmark, or Cinder Cones National Natural Landmark, includes the Cima Dome, Cima Volcanic Field, and Cima Volcanic Range, and is in the Mojave Desert within San Bernardino County, California, United States.</p><br>
<p>The dome and volcanic field with cinder cones are located within the National Park Service Mojave National Preserve south of Interstate 15 and Baker, off Kelbaker Road towards Cima, and north of the Kelso Visitors Center and Interstate 40.</p><br>
<h2>Cima Dome</h2><br>
<p>Cima Dome is a broad sloping upland dome, the erosional remnant of granite plutons that formed deep under the Earth&#39;s surface 180 - 80 million years ago when the Farallon Plate was being subducted beneath the North American Plate.</p><br>
<p>The Dome rises 1,500 ft above the volcanic plain, 2132 to 4950 ft high, and covers 70 square miles. Cima Dome is an extremely symmetric dome of this granitic formation type, and one of the most visible ones by being in open desert plains.</p><br>
<h2>Cima Volcanic Field and Range</h2><br>
<p>The Cima Volcanic Field and Cima Volcanic Range includes 40 volcanic cinder cone vents, and extensive basaltic lava flows in a volcanic field covering more than 58 square miles of the Mojave Desert. It ranges from 2132 to 4950 ft in elevation. These cinder cones range in size from 82 to 508 ft in height above the volcanic plain and from 656 to 3018 ft in base diameters. Over 30 of these cinder cones and associated lava flows, are Pleistocene in age and are located in the southern portion of the volcanic field, with the rest from the Quaternary age.</p><br>
<p>Cape St. Vincent , next to the Sagres Point, on the so-called Costa Vicentina , is a headland in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve, southern Portugal.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Cape St. Vincent was already sacred ground in Neolithic times, as standing menhirs in the neighborhood attest. The ancient Greeks called it Ophiussa (Land of Serpents), inhabited by the Oestriminis and dedicated here a temple to Heracles. The Romans called it Promontorium Sacrum (or Holy Promontory). They considered it a magical place where the sunset was much larger than anywhere else. They believed the sun sank here hissing into the ocean, marking the edge of their world.</p><br>
<p>According to legend, the name of this cape is linked to the story of a martyred fourth-century Iberian deacon St. Vincent whose body was brought ashore here. A shrine was erected over his grave; according to the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi, it was always guarded by ravens and is therefore named by him كنيسة الغراب (Kanīsah al-Ghurāb, meaning "Church of the Raven"). King Afonso Henriques (1139–1185) had the body of the saint exhumed in 1173 and brought it by ship to Lisbon, still accompanied by the ravens. This transfer of the relics is depicted on the coat of arms of Lisbon.</p><br>
<p>The area around the cape was plundered several times by pirates from France and Holland and, in 1587, by Sir Francis Drake. All existing buildings—including the Vila do Infante of Henry the Navigator—fell into ruins because of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The Franciscan friars who cared for the shrine stayed on until 1834, when all monasteries were disbanded in Portugal.</p><br>
<h3>Naval battles</h3><br>
<p>Several naval battles were fought in the vicinity of this cape:</p><br>
<p>In 1337 a Castilian fleet defeated a Portuguese fleet in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent (1337).</p><br>
<p>In 1641 during the Dutch Revolt a Spanish fleet under the 2nd Duke of Ciudad Real defeated a Dutch fleet in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent (1641).</p><br>
<p>In 1661 a Spanish fleet under Marquess of Villafiel defeated a Brandenburguese squadron under Thomas Alders in the Action of 30 September 1681</p><br>
<p>The French Admiral Anne Hilarion de Tourville defeated a large Anglo-Dutch naval fleet commanded by George Rooke escorting a convoy of between 400 and 500 English and Dutch merchant ships at the Battle of Lagos on 27 June 1693. The "Smyrna fleet" disaster, as it also came to be known, saw 94 of the richly-laden merchant ships either captured or sunk; this event led to the dismissal of two English admirals whose convoy escort had turned back off Ushant, France.</p><br>
<p>In 1719 a Spanish fleet under Admiral Rodrigo de Torres defeated a British squadron under Commodore Philip Cavendish in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent (1719)</p><br>
<p>The Action of 28 November 1751 took place off Cape St. Vincent and was a Spanish victory over an Algerian squadron.</p><br>
<p>In 1780, this cape was the site of the Battle of Cape St. Vincent (1780) between a British fleet under Admiral Sir George Rodney over a Spanish squadron under Don Juan de Lángara</p><br>
<p>Admiral Jervis with Commodore Nelson defeated the Spanish fleet in 1797 at a second Battle of Cape St. Vincent on 14 February 1797. St. Vincent Street in Glasgow was named to commemorate the battle.</p><br>
<p>In 1833, in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent (1833) a Loyalist Portuguese fleet defeated the Miguelites during Portugal&#39;s Liberal Wars.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>This cape is the southwesternmost point in Portugal. It forms the southwestern end of the E9 European Coastal Path, which runs for 5,000 km to Narva-Jõesuu in Estonia.Approximately six kilometers from the village of Sagres, the cape is a landmark for a ship traveling to or from the Mediterranean. The cliffs rise nearly vertically from the Atlantic to a height of 75 meters. The cape is a site of exuberant marine life and a high concentration of birds nesting on the cliffs, such as the rare Bonelli&#39;s eagle, peregrine falcons, kites, rock thrushes, rock pigeons, storks and herons.</p><br>
<p>The present lighthouse is 24 m high and was built over the ruins of a 16th-century Franciscan convent in 1846. The statues of St. Vincent and St. Francis Xavier had been moved to church of Nossa Senhora da Graça on Point Sagres 3 km away. This lighthouse, guarding one of the world&#39;s busiest shipping lanes, is among the most powerful in Europe (the most powerful being Phare du Creach on the French island of Ushant, off the coast of Brittany); its two 1,000 W lamps can be seen as far as 60 km away.</p><br>
<p>Mount Mitake is a 793 m high Japanese mountain located around 50 km north of Kobe in Hyōgo Prefecture. It should not be confused with Mount Mitake, a mountain in Tokyo, or Mount Ontake in Nagano Prefecture written with the same characters. This mountain is one of the 50 famous mountains in Hyōgo Prefecture.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Mount Mitake is the highest mountain in the Taki Mountains, including Mount Nishigatake and Mount Koganegadake. The Taki Mountains were one of the most holiest places for shugendo from Kamakura period to Muromachi period. However, Tamba Shugendo, a sect of Shugendo in Tamba Province, lost against Yamato Shugendo, another Shugendo sect of Yamato Province including Mount Omine, all of the temples in the Taki Mountains were burned in 1482.</p><br>
<p>The Pic de Bugarach or Pech de Bugarach  is the highest summit  in the Corbières mountains in the French Midi.</p><br>
<p>The western part of the mountain is located on the territory of the commune of Bugarach. Its eastern part is on the territory of Camps-sur-l&#39;Agly.</p><br>
<p>The geology of the Pic de Bugarach is striking. Its top layer is an overthrust from the Iberian plate and is older than the bottom ones. This has given rise to its description as an "upside-down mountain".</p><br>
<p>It is possible to climb up the Bugarach: a classical route called "Voie de la fenêtre" because of a big hole in a cliff, climbs the South face. One may go down via the easiest route, North, and join the "Col de Linas". Climbing still requires a good physical condition, and the mountain has claimed the life of at least one unprepared tourist.</p><br>
<h2>Esoterics</h2><br>
<p>Due to the mountain&#39;s unusual geology, a number of New Agers (called "esoterics" by local residents) believed that the mountain contained aliens living in a spacecraft. This group also believed that the upcoming end to the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar would result in some form of apocalypse. They believed that on 21 December 2012, the aliens supposedly living in the mountain would emerge to save them.</p><br>
<p>As a result, some members of the group had taken to living on or near the mountain, and The Independent reported that up to 100,000 people might have been planning a trip prior to the believed apocalypse date. A French parliamentary committee expressed concerns that the esoterics may be planning a mass suicide or other significant events. French police then blocked access to the mountain.</p><br>
<p>Selayar Island is the main island of the Selayar Islands . It lies off the coast of Cape Bira of South Sulawesi Province. The Selayar Straits separate it from the mainland of Sulawesi. Its main city is Benteng, towns to southern are Tanabau, Padang, Tile-tile, Pariangan, Galung, Layolo, Pa&#39;garangang, Barangbarang, up to Appattanah. To northern are Parak, Barugayya, Batangmata, Onto, and final at Bonelohe. It is over 50 miles long and very narrow at the eastern of island; area, 248 mi². Benteng is the starting point for diving tours.</p><br>
<h2>Nearby dive sites</h2><br>
<p>From Benteng, there is:</p><br>
<p>* Pulau Kambing (Goat island), located in the Selayar Straits. It has white tipped and black tipped sharks, bumhead parrotfishes, scorpionfishes, cuttlefish or an octopus and with luck the zebra batfish.</p><br>
<p>* Selayar Atoll: 10 min to 1 hour, slopes down to 16 m, sandy bottom, sea slugs, napoleon fishes, pipe fishes, Dugong.</p><br>
<p>* Selayar East: 1 to 2 hours, pelagic fishes, sometimes manta rays.</p><br>
<h2>Other sites</h2><br>
<p>* Mountain View: at Puncak. 1 hours trip to up hill. From here you can see both eastern part and western part of Selayar&#39;s beaches. When the wind blows from the west at Oct - March, Selayarese at the west side buy fish from the eastern part, as big wave smashes the west side. And vice versa when the wind blows from the east on April - Sept, the big wave hit the eastern side. People can choose the best place for diving, snorkeling or fishing all over the year in this island.</p><br>
<p>* Farmer Villages: 1 hour south from Benteng you can find Galung and Pariangang villages. Here people farm in a traditional way.</p><br>
<p>Santiago Peak is the southern mountain of Orange County&#39;s Saddleback formation. It is the highest and most prominent peak of both the Santa Ana Mountains and Orange County, and also marks a border point with Riverside County. The top of it is covered with many microwave and telecommunication antennas. It is named for Santiago Creek, which begins on its southwestern flank.</p><br>
<h2>Hiking</h2><br>
<p>More than one trail leads to the top of Santiago Peak, but the most popular among hikers is the Holy Jim trail. The Holy Jim trail gains about 4,000 ft in elevation and is a 16 mi round trip. It is a moderate to strenuous hike and is most enjoyable during spring and winter due to the large number of insects during warmer times of the year.</p><br>
<p>From the summit of Santiago Peak, one can see the larger Southern California peaks like San Gorgonio Mountain, San Jacinto Peak, and Mount San Antonio. However, due to the large number of antennas at the top of Santiago Peak, a full 360-degree view of the surrounding landscapes is not possible. Those at the top must walk approximately a quarter-mile around the perimeter of all the antennas to take in views of every direction.</p><br>
<h2>Radio communication facilities</h2><br>
<p>Santiago Peak is a radio site with buildings owned by American Tower, Crown Castle, Day Wireless, Orange County Communications, the United States Federal Government, the State of California, and Southern California Edison, among others.</p><br>
<p>Santiago Peak provides radio coverage over much of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego counties. It houses both broadcast and two-way communications facilities on virtually every frequency band, including FM broadcast, VHF low- and high-band, UHF, 800/900 MHz, and microwave.</p><br>
<p>Chester Morse Lake  is a lake in the upper region of the Cedar River watershed in the USA state of Washington. The original lake surface was 1,530 feet  above sea level, but when the river was dammed in 1900, the elevation was raised to 1,560 feet . Chester Morse Lake is more than four miles  long, and is primarily fed from the east by the north and south forks of the Cedar River, and from the south by the Rex River. The lake is part of the Seattle area water supply.</p><br>
<p>Located in the upper watershed, Chester Morse Lake is impounded by the masonry dam and a secondary control structure called the Overflow Dike. The lake now functions as a water supply storage reservoir and powers a 30-megawatt hydroelectric facility.</p><br>
<p>It was previously a natural lake called Cedar Lake. Cedar Lake was formed about 14,000 years ago by the terminal moraine of an alpine glacier descending the Cedar River valley from the upper elevations of the Cascade Mountains.</p><br>
<p>Because upstream fish passage to Chester Morse Lake is naturally blocked by Cedar Falls, the fish populations in the lake are isolated from those downstream. Bull trout and pygmy whitefish populations in Chester Morse Lake have thus been separated from other populations for at least 13,000 years, and represent unique genetic stocks of these species.</p><br>
<p>Both of these species spend most of their time in deeper portions of the lake.</p><br>
<p>The surface of Chester Morse Lake has an average annual fluctuation of about 20 feet in elevation. Inundation of the Cedar and Rex river deltas strongly affects their aquatic and wetland habitats.</p><br>
<p>Changes in lake level management toward higher lake levels in the past 15 years have resulted in a retreat upslope of sedge and willow communities on the delta. Inundation of the Cedar and Rex river channels within and upstream of the delta causes sedimentation that can negatively affect bull trout eggs. Studies are underway to examine these effects.</p><br>
<p>Smaller Lakes in the Upper Watershed</p><br>
<p>Smaller lakes in the Cedar River Watershed above Cedar Falls are all subalpine and occur in cirques, which are basins at the head of valleys carved by alpine glaciers.</p><br>
<p>None of these lakes have fish populations but all support numerous amphibian populations, including Cascades frog, Pacific tree frog, and northwestern salamanders.</p><br>
<p>Findley Lake and its watershed have been the site of extensive scientific research since its establishment as a study site under the International Biological Program in the early 1970s. Research has tapered off in recent years.</p><br>
<h2>Walsh Lake</h2><br>
<p>Walsh Lake, 68 acres in area, is the largest lake in the lower watershed. With 11 documented species, it has the greatest diversity of fish species of all lakes in the watershed. A population of kokanee (a landlocked form of sockeye salmon) lives in Walsh Lake and spawns in its major tributary, Webster Creek. Researchers at the University of Washington have claimed that Walsh Lake is among the least disturbed low elevation lakes in the Puget Sound region.</p><br>
<h2>14 Lakes</h2><br>
<p>14 Lakes are a set of five ponds ranging in size from 0.4 to 3.6 acres. (They are named for their location in Section 14 within the township/range system.)</p><br>
<p>These lakes are located in depressions and are probably “kettle lakes” created during the retreat of large glaciers that once covered Puget Sound during the Pleistocene. Kettles are formed by large, stranded pieces of glacial ice that become buried by glacial outwash sediments and after melting, leave behind a depression.</p><br>
<p>None of these lakes have perennial inflowing streams or outlets. The water levels of 14 Lakes fluctuate seasonally and inter-annually based on the amount of precipitation and rates of groundwater inflow and outflow. Because shrubs and trees can’t persist with the periodic flooding, the fluctuating water levels maintain a very diverse herbaceous-dominated shoreline with most plant species adapted to periodic flooding. <p>Due to the rarity of lake-pond habitat in the watershed and surrounding landscape, 14 Lakes are an important aquatic habitat in the region, particularly for amphibian populations. These ponds are an important refuge for amphibian populations in this area because 14 Lakes do not have fish or non-native bull frogs (which prey on amphibian eggs and larvae and can eliminate native amphibians from lakes and ponds).</p><br>
<p>The Gediz River  is the second-largest river in Anatolia flowing into the Aegean Sea. The ancient names Hermos and Hermus are sometimes still used.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>The ancient Greek name of the river was Hermos (Ἕρμος), Latinized as Hermus.</p><br>
<p>The name of the river Gediz may be related to the Lydian proper name Cadys; Gediz is also the name of a town near the river&#39;s sources. The name "Gediz" may also be encountered as a male given name in Turkey.</p><br>
<h2>Ancient geography</h2><br>
<p>The Hermos separated Aeolia from Ionia, except for Ionic Phocaea, which was north of the Hermos. The valley of the Hermos was the heartland of the ancient Lydian Empire and overlooking the valley was the Lydian capital Sardis.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>In Turkeys Aegean Region, Gediz Rivers length is second only to Büyük Menderes River whose flow is roughly parallel at a distance of slightly more than a hundred kilometers to the south.</p><br>
<p>Gediz River rises from Murat Mountain and Şaphane Mountain in Kütahya Province and flows through Uşak, Manisa and İzmir Provinces. It joins the sea in the northern section of the Gulf of Izmir, close to the gulf&#39;s mouth, near the village of Maltepe in Menemen district, south of the coastal town of Foça.</p><br>
<p>The Gediz Basin lies between northern latitudes of 3804’–3913’ and southern longitudes of 2642’–2945’. It covers 2.2% of the total area of Turkey. Larger part of the alluvial plain called under the same name as the river (Gediz Plain) is within the area of Manisa Province and a smaller downstream section within İzmir Province.</p><br>
<h2>Environmental issues</h2><br>
<p>The Gediz Delta is important as a nature reserve and is home to rare bird species. However, the reserve suffers from water shortages due to heavy demands from irrigation projects, connected to the Demirköprü Dam.</p><br>
<p>High level of urbanization and industrialization along its basin also caused Gediz River to suffer severe pollution, particularly by sand and gravel quarries and leather industry. These factors contributed to the river&#39;s formerly rich fish reserves to become a thing of the past in recent years.</p><br>
<p>Jenny Lind Island is a small island 420 km&sup2; in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, Canada. The island is located in the Queen Maud Gulf, about 120 km southeast of Cambridge Bay.</p><br>
<p>It is named for the Swedish born opera singer, Jenny Lind.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Characteristics of the terrain include rocky ridges, low-lying wetlands, sedge meadows, and a sandy shoreline.</p><br>
<h2>Fauna</h2><br>
<p>Jenny Lind Island is a Canadian Important Bird Area (#NU088), and a Key Migratory Terrestrial Bird Site. Notable bird species include Canada goose, lesser snow goose, and Ross&#39;s goose.</p><br>
<p>Muskoxen are found in the south east section of the island.</p><br>
<h2>Climate</h2><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The island is uninhabited but still has an active North Warning System. Originally part of the Distant Early Warning Line, the site is known as CAM-1.</p><br>
<p>Crotona Park is a public park in the Bronx, New York City, United States. It covers 127.5 acre and includes a 3.3 acre lake, as well as the Bronx&#39;s largest swimming pool and 28 species of trees. The park is bounded by Crotona Park West , Crotona Park North, Crotona Park East, and Crotona Park South; Claremont Parkway and Crotona Avenue pass through it. The Crotona Play Center is in the western part of the park. Robert Moses famously refused to realign the Cross-Bronx Expressway, which is located several blocks north of the park&#39;s northern boundary, to pass along the edge of the park and save a number of homes from demolition.</p><br>
<p>Late in August, the park is the location of the EmblemHealth Bronx Open, an International Tennis Federation womens tennis tournament with a $100,000 purse which features players in the top 100, who use the tournament as a "tune-up" for the USA Open which begins the following week. The Bronx Open also hosts the United States Tennis Associations National Junior Doubles championship for boys and girls age 14-16. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the New York Junior Tennis League.</p><br>
<h2>Swimming pool</h2><br>
<p>Crotona Play Center is the only swimming pool complex built by the Works Progress Administration in the Bronx. It opened in July 1936. Named for the ancient Greek city of Croton, it is located in Crotona Park on property which was formerly the estate of the Bathgate family. It was designated a New York City landmark in 2007, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.</p><br>
<p>The Crotona Play Center was completed during the tenure of influential New York City Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. Herbert Magoon and others shared credit as the architect, Aymar Embury II was the consulting architect, and Gilmore D. Clarke and others were the landscape architects.</p><br>
<p>The facility is entered through a very large arched brick gateway, which is overlooked by glass-block skylights. A large bathhouse is situated between the pool and a wading pool area used at an earlier time. The interior of the bathhouse is admirable, with mirror-image locker rooms and arched concrete buttresses extending across overhead.</p><br>
<p>The facility has been run by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation since its construction. It was restored by the city in 1984 and continues to function as a swimming pool and bathhouse.</p><br>
<h2>In popular culture</h2><br>
<p>The park is referenced in Clifford Odets play Waiting for Lefty, in Act III when Irv tells his sister Florence that their mother doesnt want her meeting her boyfriend Sid in Crotona Park.</p><br>
<p>Isola Madre, at 220 m wide and 330 m long, is the largest island of the Isole Borromee archipelago which falls within the Italian part of the Alpine Lake Maggiore, in the Province of Verbano Cusio Ossola, Piedmont.</p><br>
<p>The island is occupied by a number of buildings and architectural structures and is especially well known for its gardens.</p><br>
<p>In the past it was known as Isola di San Vittore and later as Isola Maggiore.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The available historical sources indicate that in the middle of the ninth century the island had a church, a cemetery (whose existence is recalled by the current garden’s so-called scala dei morti, or “Staircase of the Dead”). It is known for certain that olives were cultivated here; the produce may have been employed for sacred purposes.</p><br>
<p>In 1501 Lancillotto Borromeo, one of the five children of Giovanni III Borromeo and Cleofe Pio di Carpi, introduced the cultivation of citrus fruit to the island, the plants being brought from Liguria, along with a gardener (or hortolano) to tend them. Lancillotto began the construction of the family residence on the island, which in the 1580s was extended in the renaissance style by Renato I Borromeo.</p><br>
<h2>Monuments</h2><br>
<p>The Palazzo Borromeo was built in the sixteenth century on the remains of the early church, cemetery and perhaps castle of San Vittore (named after the martyr Victor Maurus).</p><br>
<p>The palace is surrounded by impressive gardens, the Giardini Botanici dell&#39;Isola Madre, covering an area of eight hectares whose construction all’Inglese (in the English style) began in the late eighteenth century on the site of a citrus orchard. Particularly prized is the scala dei morti, or staircase of the dead, which in recent decades has been embellished with an important collection of Wisterias.</p><br>
<p>The family chapel of 1858 is also noteworthy; by contrast to that of Isola Bella, it contains no tombs or funerary monuments.</p><br>

<p>Lake Blackshear is a man-made lake on the Flint River in Georgia created by a dam that was constructed from 1925 to 1930.</p><br>
<p>The Crisp County Power Dam, also known as the Warwick Dam, was the first county owned, constructed, and operated power dam in the United States, requiring an amendment to the Georgia State Constitution to make the project legally possible. It came online in August, 1930, under the authority of the Crisp County Power Commission.</p><br>
<p>The lake is approximately 20 mi long and varies in width, but is rarely more than one mile (1.6 km) wide; it covers approximately 8,500 acre. It was named for David Blackshear, the founder of Fort Early. When the dam was constructed, little effort was made to cut the trees that would soon be underwater. It was believed that the trees would soon die and decompose once submerged. While this was true for many of the trees, there are still many living Cypress trees in the middle of the lake and there are still many dead trees that have not fallen down. The lake borders five counties in Southwest Georgia: Crisp, Dooly, Lee, Sumter and Worth.</p><br>
<p>The Georgia Veterans State Park is located on the east side of the lake. Nestled in the middle of the Park is providing visitors with views of Lake.</p><br>
<p>The Baskatong Reservoir  is a man-made lake in western Quebec, Canada. It was formed following the construction of the Mercier Dam in 1927 and has an area of 413 km. Since 2007, a 55 MW generating station is in operation at the site of the dam, the reservoir also being used to control the flow of the Gatineau River for several hydroelectric generating stations downstream.</p><br>

<h2>Fish species</h2><br>
<p>Baskatong Reservoir is a popular location for fishing and has over 20 outfitters established on its shores. Fish species present are walleye, northern pike, lake trout, whitefish, and landlocked salmon.</p><br>
<p>Coldwater River is a 29.5 mi stream in the U.S. state of Michigan. Located in Branch County, the river rises in Ovid Township at {{coord|41|50|14|N|84|59|13|W|region:US-MI_type:river_source:GNIS}} as the outflow of Coldwater Lake. Flowing north and west, it is joined by the outflow from the Lake of the Woods and continues north for several miles. West of the city of Coldwater, it flows through a series of lakes: South Lake, Messenger Lake, Cemetery Lake, North Lake, Randall Lake, Morrison Lake, Craig Lake, and Hodunk Pond. It then continues to the northwest and empties into the St. Joseph River in the village of Union City at {{coord|42|03|58|N|85|07|48|W|region:US-MI_type:river_source:GNIS}}.</p><br>

<p>Pemigewasset Lake is a 249 acre water body located in the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire in the United States. The lake straddles the border between the towns of New Hampton and Meredith, both in Belknap County. Outflow from the lake travels down Harper Brook to the Pemigewasset River, a tributary of the Merrimack River, which flows to the Gulf of Maine.</p><br>
<p>The lake is classified as a warmwater fishery, with observed species including smallmouth and largemouth bass, chain pickerel, horned pout, and black crappie.</p><br>
<h2>Development</h2><br>
<p>Summer camps, private residences, and a campground line the northern side of the lake, while the southern shoreline is less developed. NH Route 104 runs past the north shore of the lake. A private area called "Smoke Rise" lies on the western side of the lake. Smoke Rise Road and a smaller secondary road, Easy Street, are located in this area. Smoke Rise borders the southwest side of Pemi Shores, a popular local campground.</p><br>
<h2>Island</h2><br>
<p>The western portion of the lake contains a large uninhabited island. The island is edged with edible blueberries and boasts some rather large, old trees inland. It is named Kelley Island on state Fish and Game Department maps but is often referred to as Blueberry Island.</p><br>
<p>Although evidence of previous fire pits can be found on the island, burning is strictly prohibited by the New Hampton fire department.</p><br>
<p>The Central Embarcadero Piers Historic District is a Registered Historic District in the City of San Francisco, California, United States. It consists of Piers 1, 1½, 3 and 5, is one of the largest surviving pier complexes along San Francisco&#39;s Embarcadero. The Central Embarcadero Piers Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 2002.</p><br>
<h2>Construction</h2><br>
<p>With construction spanning over a decade and led by Chief Engineer of the State Harbor Commission, Frank G. White, Piers 1, 1½, 3 and 5, were opened in 1918. Unlike the piers south of the Ferry Building that were designed in the Mission and Gothic Revival styles, the piers north of the Ferry Building were built in the Beaux-Arts architecture style, similar to New York City&#39;s Chelsea Piers. The timber-frame bulkhead buildings, covered in stucco, are each two stories high, punctuated by two-story arches. Behind these formal building are the areas more closely associated with the functioning of the port&mdash;the piers and transit sheds. Concrete or timber piers extend east behind the bulkhead buildings, connected to the system of wharves upon which the bulkhead buildings rest. Steel truss and timber frame buildings, accommodating the loading and unloading of ships are built upon the piers, with open aprons for circulation.</p><br>
<h2>Early history</h2><br>
<p>These were the only group of piers in the Port of San Francisco dedicated chiefly to inland trade and transport. These connections facilitated the growth of communities in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys and fostered California&#39;s agricultural business that led the state to become the richest in the nation, as well the fifth largest economy in the world. The Delta King and Delta Queen provided overnight connections between San Francisco and Sacramento from Pier 1½, making it an important gateway for public travel to the interior of the state. Pier 3 and Pier 5 served primarily freight shipping, with a variety of companies sharing the bulkhead office and warehouse spaces and the huge transit sheds which originally extended the full length of the finger piers for more than 700 feet (212 m) east from the wharf on the Embarcadero.</p><br>
<h2>World War II</h2><br>
<p>The San Francisco waterfront piers played a crucial role in the Pacific theater during World War II. With the outbreak of the war, San Francisco&#39;s waterfront became a military logistics center; troops, equipment and supplies left the Port in support of the Pacific theater. Almost every pier and wharf was involved in military activities, with troop ships and naval vessels tied up all along the Embarcadero. In addition, the military briefly set up antiaircraft guns and searchlights at piers along the waterfront from 1941 to 1942. The Coast Guard, Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Maritime Service Enrolling Office occupied Pier 5.</p><br>
<h2>Modern times</h2><br>
<p>After the war, the piers fell into disuse, as ports in Oakland, Alameda and Richmond were better equipped to respond to the conversion to containerization. Piers 1½ and 5 were early examples of finding new uses for buildings which form a valuable part of the citys environment. The former Passenger Waiting Room of Pier 1½ was converted into an architects waterfront office, and the bulkheads of Piers 1½ and 5 were used as professional office space. While many of the piers were demolished, Piers 1 ½, 3 and 5 remain the most visible from the Ferry Building and Market Street, still the main thoroughfare of the city.</p><br>
<p>In January 2001, San Francisco Waterfront Partner, LLC was selected by the Port of San Francisco to redevelop the historic Piers 1½, 3 and 5. The project focuses on preserving and rehabilitating the historic maritime design of the Northeast Waterfront and the Ferry Building Waterfront while enhancing the public use and access to the historic and scenic waterfront setting.</p><br>

Also, weathering and erosion of the region is a major factor in shaping the landscape. Heavy rainfall and landslides have worked to alter the mountains.</p><br>
<p>The range is part of a broad, plunging structural arch of sedimentary and Tertiary volcanic strata that is being uplifted. Eocene and Miocene sections form the flanks of the uplifted sections. Some of the oldest rocks are submarine tholeiitic basalts from the Eocene era. The basalt came from the basalt flows that covered much of Oregon and originated from volcanoes in the central portion of the state. Other rocks include sandstone, mudstone, and siltstone. It was during the middle Miocene period that the range was uplifted in the broad, northeast-plunging arch.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<p>Portions of the range are in the Siuslaw National Forest and Tillamook State Forest, and large sections of the range were burned in forest fires during the 1930s and 1940s as part of the Tillamook Burn. In the forested areas trees include Sitka spruce, western redcedar, Douglas-fir, and western hemlock. Other plants that grow in the region are huckleberry, salmonberry, salal, vine maple, sword fern, Oregon grape, bracken fern, and thimble-berry to name a few.</p><br>
<p>Arthropods and molluscs found include millipedes, collembolans, spiders, beetles, slugs, and various centipedes. Animals that inhabit the Northern Coast range are weevils, chipmunks, bears, rabbits, white-footed deer mice, Columbian Black tail deer, and others. Birds include chickadees, red-breasted nuthatches, kinglets, Western pileated woodpeckers, Oregon gray jays, California creepers, and Sitka red crossbills among others.</p><br>
<h2>Location and climate</h2><br>
<p>The range begins at the Columbia River, with some mountainous features on the north side of the river, and continues south roughly 100 mi to the Salmon River where Oregon Route 18 traverses the range from the Willamette Valley to the Oregon Coast. The width of the range varies but is roughly 35 mi.</p><br>
<p>The climate of the range is moderate because of marine influences, and annual precipitation is heavy, varying from 60 to 180 in.</p><br>

<p>Rose Valley Lake is a reservoir that covers 389 acre in Gamble Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. The fish and waters of the lake are managed by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The lake is owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The primary use of Rose Valley Lake is recreational game fishing. The lake is open for recreational fishing on a year-round basis. Ice fishing is permitted, but the thickness of the ice is not monitored by the Fish Commission. The most common game species of fish in the lake are, largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, muskellunge, yellow perch, chain pickerel, pumpkinseed and walleye. The lake is five miles east of USA Route 15 and Pennsylvania Route 14. Rose Valley Lake can be reached by taking Trout Run Mountain Road to Rose Valley Mountain Road.</p><br>
<p>Rogers Peak is the highest mountain in Tillamook County, Oregon. Located in the Tillamook State Forest, the peak is also the highest peak in the Northern Oregon Coast Range, which is the northern section of the Oregon Coast Range.</p><br>

<p>Hiking the mountain is about a 3.5 mi round-trip with an elevation gain of about 1,100 ft. The mountain, located on private timber land, is on the Oregon Coast.</p><br>
<h2>Name history</h2><br>
<p>In 1964 the mountain officially became Rogers Peak. Previously, it had also been referred to as Blue Lake Peak and Nels Rogers Peak. The mountain was named for Nelson S. Rogers, who was the Oregon State Forester from 1940-1949. He was a prominent figure in the rehabilitation of the Tillamook Burn.</p><br>
<p>Black Hawk Lake is a natural glacially-formed lake measuring 957 acre in area in Sac County, Iowa, at the eastern edge of the city of Lake View, Iowa in Viola and Wall Lake Townships. It exits through the oddly named "Ditch No. 57" to Indian Creek, a tributary of the North Raccoon River. It is named for Chief Black Hawk.</p><br>
<p>The state of Iowa maintains a state park and a wildlife management area around the lake. There is a boat ramp and campgrounds and easy access for fishing. The park and lake are the northern end of the Sauk Rail Trail, a trail using an abandoned rail right of way, terminating in the south at Swan Lake. There are plans to establish a hiking and bicycle trail through publicly owned areas surrounding the lake.</p><br>

<p>Pollux  is a mountain in the Pennine Alps on the border between Valais, Switzerland and the Aosta Valley in Italy. It is the lower of a pair of twin peaks , the other being Castor, named after the Gemini twins of Roman mythology. Pollux&#39; peak is at an elevation of 4,092 m. It is separated from Castor by a pass at 3,847 m, named Passo di Verra in Italian, Col de Verra in French and Zwillingsjoch in German.</p><br>
<p>The first ascent was by Jules Jacot from Geneva with guides Josef-Marie Perren and Peter Taugwalder (father) on August 1 (the Swiss national day) 1864. Their route was via the Schwarztor, a pass first crossed by John Ball and Gabriel Zumtaugwald in 1845. The impressive north ridge was first climbed by Captain John Percy Farrar (a future President of the Alpine Club) and Wylie Lloyd with guide Josef Pollinger of St. Niklaus in the canton Valais on 18 August 1893.</p><br>
<p>Ascents are usually made from the Refuge Ottorino Mezzalama (3,036 m), the Monte Rosa hut (2,795 m); if traversing the peaks via Pollux&#39;s north ridge, PD+, the Refuge Quintino Sella au Félik (3,585 m), and the Rossi-Volante bivouac hut (3,850 m).</p><br>
<p>The first winter and ski ascent of Pollux was by Dr Alfred von Martin and Karl Planck on 7 March 1913.</p><br>
<p>There are also a pair of summits named Pollux and Castor in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA. Located in the Absaroka Range, Pollux is 3,373 m, 65 m higher than its twin.</p><br>
<p>The Brissago Islands  are a group of two islands located in the Swiss part of Lake Maggiore close to Ronco sopra Ascona and Brissago. Both islands belong to the district of Locarno, in the canton of Ticino.</p><br>
<p>San Pancrazio (also known as Grande Isola) is the larger and is well known for its botanical garden. On the smaller of the islands, known as Isolino, or Isola Piccola or Isola di Sant’Apollinare, the vegetation is allowed to develop naturally. Both benefit from the mild climate provided by the lake. The minimum distance from the shore is 1,040 metres for San Pancrazio and 930 metres for Sant&#39;Apollinare, making them the farthest islands from the shore in Switzerland. Both islands culminate at 200 metres above sea level or 7 metres above lake level (193 m).</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Roman remains have been found on San Pancrazio. The islands were used as a refuge by early Christians. In the thirteenth century nuns of the Humiliati order built a monastery on San Pancrazio, while the local parish also built around this time the Church of S. Pancrazio. After the suppression of the Humiliati in 1571 by Pope Pius V, the order&#39;s property was given to the hospital in Locarno and the islands became uninhabited.</p><br>
<h3>St Leger</h3><br>
<p>In 1885 an Anglo-Irishman of the St. Leger family, Richard Fleming, and his Russian-born wife, Antoniette (nee Bayer, 1856 to 1948) purchased the Brissago Islands.</p><br>
<p>On San Pancrazio they constructed a large house and then began to create a botanical garden, which required bringing by boat to the island earth and manure. In 1897 Richard Fleming left the islands for Naples where he worked at the British Consulate and died in 1922. During this later period the writer James Joyce visited the island and stayed at her house. Between 1886 and 1914, Antoinette de Saint Léger (as she called herself) hosted on the island the painters Danielle Ranzoni, Filippo Franzoni and Giovanni Segantini and the composer Ruggero Leoncavallo. After the end of World War I she also hosted James Joyce, Rainer Maria Rilke and Harry Graf Kessler.</p><br>
<p>After the First World War, due to poor investments she was deeply in debt and in 1927 she was forced to sell the property. She moved first to Ascona and then to Intragna, where public assistance supported her until her death, on 24 January 1948.</p><br>
<h3>Max Emden</h3><br>
<p>In 1928 Hamburg department store king Max Emden purchased the islands, demolished the existing house and replaced it with a neoclassical villa.</p><br>
<h3>Purchase by the public</h3><br>
<p>In 1949, Emden’s son Hans Erich, who had emigrated to Chile accepted an offer from a consortium consisting of the Canton Ticino, the municipalities of Ascona, Brissago and Ronco sopra Ascona, plus the Swiss Nature Protection League (known today as the Swiss Heritage Society) to purchase the islands. The purchase agreement was signed on 2 September 1949.</p><br>
<p>On the morning of 2nd April, 1959 the Brissago Islands were opened to the public.</p><br>
<h2>Parco botanico del Canton Ticino</h2><br>
<p>While the smaller island has been left in its natural state, The botanical garden (Parco botanico del Canton Ticino) on San Pancrazio is home to approximately 1,500 plant species, among which are azaleas, rhododendrons, Japanese palm trees, numerous camellias, Japanese banana, bamboo, magnolia, agaves, cypress, yucca, California poppies. The garden today covers 2.5 hectares and receives more than 90 000 visitors a year.</p><br>
<p>Today the villa contains a restaurant and the administration offices of the Botanical Park of Canton Ticino.</p><br>
<p>The Brissago Islands are part of the Gardens of Switzerland network.</p><br>
<p>The Ralph Waldo Emerson House is a house museum located at 18 Cambridge Turnpike, Concord, Massachusetts, and a National Historic Landmark for its associations with American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. He and his family named the home Bush. The museum is open mid-April to mid-October; an admission fee is charged.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The house was built in 1828 by the Coolidge family and named "Coolidge Castle". It was used as a summer house on the village outskirts, beside the Cambridge and Concord Turnpike. It is a four-square, two-story frame building in a house style common to many New England towns.</p><br>
<p>While Ralph Waldo Emerson was preparing to marry Lydia Jackson (whom he called "Lidian"), he told her he could not live in her home town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. "Plymouth is streets", he wrote to her, "I live in the wide champaign." He had previously lived in Concord at The Old Manse, the Emerson family home, and hoped to return to that town. In July 1835, he wrote in his journal, "I bought my house and two acres six rods of land of John T. Coolidge for 3,500 dollars." He and Jackson married on September 14 and moved into the home the next day, along with his mother.</p><br>
<p>In a contemporary letter, he writes that he is pleased to avoid the trouble of building, but writes: "It is in a mean place, and cannot be fine until trees and flowers give it a character of its own". To that end, he spent between $400 and $500 for enlargements and finishing. The money came from a settlement with the family of his first wife, Ellen Tucker, who had died young. He wrote that he hoped to "crowd so many books and papers, and, if possible, wise friends into it, that it shall have as much wit as it can carry." It became a central meeting place for philosophers, idealists, and poets.</p><br>
<p>Emerson remained in the house for the rest of his life. In it he wrote his famous essays "The American Scholar" and "Self Reliance". He also entertained a host of notable neighbors and visitors including Bronson and Louisa May Alcott, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau. Beginning in July 1836, the home hosted the meetings of the Transcendental Club, a group which included Orestes Brownson, Theodore Parker, and others.</p><br>
<p>Emerson made his living as a lecturer in New England and beyond; by the 1850s he was giving as many as 80 per year. He eventually gave some 1,500 lectures in his lifetime. His earnings allowed him to expand his property, buying 11 acre of land by Walden Pond and a few more acres in a neighboring pine grove. He wrote that he was "landlord and waterlord of 14 acres, more or less".</p><br>
<p>In April 1841, Thoreau accepted an invitation to move into Bush with the family. As Emerson described to his brother William: "He is to have his board, etc., for what labor he chooses to do, and he is thus far a great benefactor... for he is an indefatigable and very skillful laborer". Thoreau later built his well-known cabin on Emerson&#39;s property at Walden Pond. After his experiment in living deliberately, he returned to Bush in September 1847 and stayed there until the next July.</p><br>
<p>While living in the house, Emerson published his book of Essays in 1841, as well as a second series of essays in 1844. He also published two volumes of poetry, Poems in 1846 and May-Day and Other Pieces in 1867.</p><br>
<p>The house caught fire on the morning of July 24, 1872, and Emerson ran out to call for help from neighbors. After the fire was put out, friends took up a collection to pay for repairs, raising some $12,000 in total, and sending the Emersons to Europe and Egypt while the house was restored. In 1873 the Emersons returned to reoccupy the house.</p><br>
<p>Emerson died in the house in 1882, and in 1892 his wife Lidian followed. Their daughter Ellen Tucker Emerson, who remained unmarried, lived in the house until her death in 1909. Other friends and relatives lived here until 1948.</p><br>
<h2>House today</h2><br>
<p>Today the house is still owned by the family. It was first opened to the public in 1930 as a private museum; it continues to operate as a museum, open on a seasonal basis.</p><br>
<p>The interior furnishings remain much as they did when Emerson lived in the home, with original furniture and Emersons memorabilia. The exception is the furniture and books from his study, which are now on display in the Concord Museum across the street. His personal book collection has been moved to Harvard Universitys Houghton Library.</p><br>
<p>Konevets  is an approximately 8.5-km² island famous as the site of the Konevsky Monastery. It is located off the southwestern shore of Lake Ladoga near the village of Vladimirovka. The island is part of the Priozersky District of Leningrad Oblast. The nearest town is Priozersk, which is located 40 km away from the island. The island of Valaam is 60 km away and St. Petersburg is 170 km away by boat. There is a ferry link from Vladimirovka that makes the 6.5-km trip in 40&ndash;50 minutes.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and environment</h2><br>
<p>The island is 6.5 km long and generally slightly less than 2 km wide. At its widest point near the monastery on the south end of the island, where it is approximately 3 km wide. The island is completely covered in sandy soil. The majority of the shore is covered in fine sand beaches. Topographically, the island is mostly level. The terrain of sandy heath slopes gently up from the shoreline towards the interior of the island, where two cliffs, Svyataya and Zmeinaya, rise up out of the ground to 34 m and 29 m above sea level respectively. The steep cliffs are the result of erosion when the water level in Lake Ladoga was slightly less than 20 m above the current sea level, thus reaching the base of these cliffs, thousands of years before the Neva emerged. The majority of the island is uninhabited, and covered by coniferous trees. The average annual temperature is 3.5 °C. The island experiences a short summer season, from mid June to the latter half of August. July is the warmest month on the island. Winters can be quite harsh, and it is possible to walk to the island across the ice then.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>There is no certain information about the island’s earliest stages. According to sources discussing the establishment of the monastery on the island, there was a rock named Kon-kamen or Horse Rock where the Karelians went to perform sacrifices. The rock is located approximately 1 km north-northeast of the monastery at the base of the west slope of Svyataya. The rock is a rounded granite slab that is 9 m long, 6 m wide, approximately 4 m high and 750 tons that resembles the head of a horse. An Orthodox chapel has been built on top of it. The Russian name for the island, and thus the current Finnish name, are derived from the name of the rock or perhaps the assumed original Karelian name Hevossaari (Horse Island).</p><br>
<p>The island’s Orthodox Monastery of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded by Arseny of Novgorod in 1393. The Swedes captured the island and destroyed the monastery in 1577 and 1610. Sweden lost control of the island as a result of their being beaten by Peter I of Russia in the Great Northern War. The current buildings are mainly from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The island did not suffer any damage in the Russian revolution, as it had become part of Independent Finland in 1917.</p><br>
<p>In 1940, during the Second World War, the monks moved to the interior of Finland and ended up joining the monks at the Orthodox Monastery of New Valamo. The island was ceded to the Soviet Union and the monastery fell into disrepair. From 1944 to 1990, the island was used by the military and thus closed to the public. In 1991, visitors were allowed back on the island and repairs and renovations to the monastery commenced. Approximately 20 monks now live on the island, which has become a popular place of pilgrimage.</p><br>
<h2>Trivia</h2><br>
<p>A traditional Karelian folk song about the island is entitled Konevitsan kirkonkellot (The Church Bells of Konevets). The Finnish group Piirpauke recorded a version of this song in 1975. Heavy metal band Sentenced used the melody as intro on their 2002 album The Cold White Light.</p><br>
<p>The Clemence–Irons House  is a historic house at 38 George Waterman Road in Johnston, Rhode Island. It was built by Richard Clemence in 1691 and is a rare surviving example of a "stone ender", a building type first developed in the western part of England and common in colonial Rhode Island. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a historic house museum owned and operated by Historic New England. It is open Saturdays between June and mid-October.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Richard Clemence, a farmer, constructed the Clemence–Irons House in 1691. Passing through a series of owners in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, the house had grown to 13 rooms by 1938, when it was purchased by Henry Sharpe and his sisters, Ellen Sharpe and Louisa Sharpe Metcalf. Additions by this time included a one-story parlor with a separate fireplace at the north end, a second lean-to with kitchen, bath and stair hall and two bedrooms, a one-story ell at the southwest corner, and a front hall and porch at the southeast corner.</p><br>
<p>Nonetheless, the Sharpe family valued the age and recognized the stone-ender characteristics of the house. It commissioned Norman Isham, who had directed restoration efforts at nearby Eleazer Arnold House in 1920, to investigate the structure and restore the house to its 17th-century appearance.</p><br>
<p>Isham determined that the original house consisted of one-and-a-half stories with a rear lean-to and a steep gable roof. In the plan, he found evidence of four rooms on the first floor instead of the more typical one-room plan of other early stone-enders. Removing the later additions and baring the main block of non-original interior finishes, the house was rebuilt to reflect Isham&#39;s findings.</p><br>
<p>The plan consists of a great room and chamber in the main block, with a kitchen and second smaller chamber in the rear lean-to. Using a combination of salvaged and new materials to recreate the original appearance of the house, Isham also commissioned furnishings made from old wood to complement the architectural reconstruction.</p><br>
<p>Significant as one of the oldest houses in Rhode Island, the Clemence–Irons House also is important as a record of mid-20th-century restoration ideas and methods. The house was donated to the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, now known as Historic New England, in 1947. Together with the Eleazer Arnold House, the Clemence–Irons House provides a rare opportunity to study the stone-ender in New England.</p><br>
<p>The Wollaston Islands  are a group of islands in Chile south of Navarino Island and north of Cape Horn and east of the Hoste Island. The islands are Grevy, Bayly, Wollaston and Freycinet, as well as the islets Dédalo, Surgidero, Diana, Otarie, Middle and Adriana. The islands are part of Cabo de Hornos National Park.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The islands are located north of the Hermite Islands and separated from them by the Franklin Channel. The islets Terhalten, Sesambre, Evout and Barnevelt are located easterly and are not considered part of the Wollaston islands. North of the islands is the Nassau Bay.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The islands were named between 1829 and 1831 by the British naval officer Henry Foster, after the English scientist William Hyde Wollaston. The indigenous name in the Yahgan language was Yachkusin, "place of islands". The Yahgan lived throughout central Tierra del Fuego to Cape Horn. Numerous place names reflect British interests in the 19th century.</p><br>
<p>In the later 19th century, Wollaston was the site of an English South American Mission Society to the Yahgan. (See Martin Gusinde Anthropological Museum#Stirling Pavilion).</p><br>
<p>After Chile and Argentina achieved independence, they asserted their claims in this area. The Boundary Treaty of 1881 between Chile and Argentina ceded the islands south of the Beagle Channel to Chile, but 1904 Argentina claimed the islands. In 1978 Argentina started the Operation Soberanía to occupy the islands around Cape Horn and then, in a second phase, either to stop or continue hostilities according to the Chilean reaction. The invasion was halted after a few hours. In 1982, after the invasion of the Falklands, the Argentine government planned also the invasion of the islands south of the Beagle Channel.</p><br>
<p>Brion Island  is a currently uninhabited island in the Magdalen Islands archipelago in the middle of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and part of the municipality of Grosse-Île, Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada. It is the most northeast of the islands in the Magdalen archipelago, apart from the Bird Rocks  twenty kilometres east-north-east.</p><br>

<p>Passing by the island in 1534, Jacques Cartier erected his second cross and named the island ille de Bryon after his principal expeditionary patron Philippe de Chabot, Seigneur de Brion and Admiral of France.</p><br>

<p>Haldimand Cliff (Falaise Haldimand), named for Frederick Haldimand, is on the southeast coast of the island.</p><br>
<h2>Natural history</h2><br>
<p>Almost the entire island is encompassed by the Réserve écologique de l&#39;Île-Brion. The Bird Rocks Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary encompasses several small islands to the northwest of Brion Island.</p><br>
<p>The Greersburg Academy was an institution established by Reverend Thomas Hughes in Darlington, Pennsylvania, United States in 1802. The academy was created as a "prep" school for college. Classes included languages, philosophy, and astronomy. The stone structure was built around 1806 making it one of the oldest buildings still standing in Beaver County. Though it was originally built as a school, the structure functioned as a railway station for a time, serving several railroads between 1883 and 1972. The structure is one of the oldest structures to have ever been used as a station. Notable alumni of the school were abolitionist John Brown, Walter Forward, John White Geary, Daniel Leasure, William Holmes McGuffey. The Little Beaver Historical Society currently maintains the structure.</p><br>
<p>Bazaikha, Bazaiha  is a river in the Krasnoyarsk Krai. It is the third largest river in the Krasnoyarsk neighborhood after Yenisey and Mana. The name derived from the Kamassian bazaī-ďağa — iron river.</p><br>
<p>The length of Bazaiha is 128 km. Beginning in the Eastern Sayan mountains it flows west-northward without a contact with populated places until the very confluence with the Yenisey in the suburbs near the southwestern edge of the Krasnoyarsk city. The valley is mostly deep and winding with the banks covered with conifers.</p><br>
<p>Numerous resorts, dachas and cottages are built in the valley stretching for 14 km inwards from the confluence. By the Yenisey, the village of Bazaikha is located in what is considered a part of Krasnoyarsk; it should not be confused with the railway station named Bazaikha which is 18 km west of it.</p><br>
<p>The closest approach to the wild part of Bazaikha is from the villages of Beryozovskiy and Magansk.</p><br>
<p>Wright&#39;s Tavern is a historic tavern located in the center of Concord, Massachusetts. It is now a National Historic Landmark owned by the Society of the First Parish, Concord, with important associations with the Battle of Lexington and Concord at the start of the American Revolution.</p><br>
<h2>Overview</h2><br>
<p>Wrights Tavern was built in 1747 by Ephraim Jones, who operated it until 1751. At the dawn of the American Revolution in April 1775, it was managed by Amos Wright, whose name it has borne ever since. On April 19, the day of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, when the courthouse bell announced the approach of Major Pitcairns British troops, the Concord Minutemen assembled at Wrights Tavern. Later, after Pitcairns arrival in the Concord square, British officers refreshed themselves in the tavern.</p><br>
<p>The tavern also has earlier links to the Massachusetts Provincial Congress which met next door in October 1774, in the First Parish Church. With John Hancock as president and Benjamin Lincoln as secretary, the Congress consisted of 300 delegates from Massachusetts towns who passed measures ending tax payments to the Crown and organizing a militia force to defy King George III by arms if necessary. Wright&#39;s Tavern was used as a meeting place for committees of the Congress during the 5-day session.</p><br>
<p>Since the Revolution the building has been put to many uses. Today the tavern is still in good condition with red clapboards and a double-hipped (monitor) roof above its two main stories. It currently serves as the minister&#39;s offices to the adjacent First Parish Unitarian Church of Concord and as the headquarters of Nashawtuc Architects.</p><br>
<p>The Bank of Florence was an early wildcat bank located at 8502 North 30th Street in Florence, Nebraska Territory. After originally opening in the 1850s, it closed and reopened in 1904. Today the building that housed the bank is the Bank of Florence Museum. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is the oldest building in Omaha, Nebraska.</p><br>
<h2>About</h2><br>
<p>The town of Florence was founded on the ruins of Winter Quarters, with dozens of small buildings still intact from the early Mormon pioneer settlement. A speculator&#39;s dream, the town was quickly built.</p><br>
<p>The Bank of Florence was built as a wildcat bank for speculators to make an easy profit. Many of the early investors included members of the land company that founded the nearby town of Saratoga, as well as local businessmen. When the Panic of 1857 hit, many local townspeople and farmers were financially drained.</p><br>
<p>The building reopened as the Second Bank of Florence in 1904, and was restored as a landmark in the 1980s.</p><br>
<p>Today the building has been turned into the Bank of Florence Museum, which is owned and operated by the Florence Historical Foundation. Visitors can view the main bank floor, the vault, the rooms upstairs that served as the home of the original bank manager, and a restored Florence Telephone Company switchboard. The bank is open on Fridays and Sunday from May through August and on special event days. Tours on other days can be arranged by appointment.</p><br>
<p>Berwick Bay is the section of the Lower Atchafalaya River in Louisiana from Morgan City north to Sixmile Lake. U.S. Route 90 crosses Berwick Bay connecting the town of Berwick on the west bank of the Atchafalaya to Morgan City on the east bank. There is also a Southern Pacific vertical lift bridge connecting the two municipalities. This stretch of water lends its name to Vessel Traffic Service Berwick Bay which manages the waters south of 29°45&#39; N., west of 91°10&#39; W., north of 29°37&#39; N., and east of 91°18&#39; W. These waters include the junction of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, the Port Allen-Morgan City Alternate Route and several tributary bayous. Narrow bridge openings and a swift river current require one-way traffic flow through the bridges. VTS Berwick Bay is unique among United States Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Services because it maintains direct control of vessel traffic.</p><br>
<p>Eagle Peak is a mountain in the Absaroka Range in the USA state of Wyoming and at 11,372 ft is the highest point in Yellowstone National Park. It is located about 6 mi east of the southeast arm of Yellowstone Lake.</p><br>
<h2>Etymology</h2><br>
<p>According to Lee Whittlesey, Eagle Peak was named in 1885 by geologist Arnold Hague for its resemblance to a "spread eagle". Another source states that it was named in 1878 by Jack Newell, who killed a golden eagle on the mountain that year.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Up until the 1930s, most park officials and geologists believed that Electric Peak near Gardiner, Montana was the park&#39;s highest peak, not Eagle Peak. It is ranked as the 218th highest peak in Wyoming and the 2252nd highest peak in the United States. During the historic Yellowstone fires of 1988, the south slopes of Eagle Peak were affected by the Mink Fire.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Eagle Peak is part of the Absaroka Range and is formed of Eocene age volcaniclastic rocks. In the last ice age, the area was covered by an ice cap over 1,600 ft thick. Glacial deposits remain in some locations on the mountain.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>Located in the Absaroka Range, on the park boundary with Shoshone National Forest in northwestern Wyoming, the mountain rises about 6 mi east of the southeast arm of Yellowstone Lake. The mountain is also one of the highest points in the Washakie Wilderness area of Shoshone National Forest. Eagle Peak is of a similar height to several other local mountains; there is a ridge which gradually gets higher as it heads southeast culminating in several summits - Mount Schurz, to the immediate northwest is shorter, and Pinnacle Mountain, to the immediate southeast, is taller, but outside of the park boundary.</p><br>
<p>Several creeks flow through the mountain and the surrounding area and they become a vehicle for cold melt water. The Gardner River flows to the east of the summit. Some of the runoff is fed by the melting of the two major snowfields found in the shadows of the north face of the mountain.</p><br>
<p>Eagle Peak is one of the most prominent features of the Eagle Peak Quadrangle, a USGS division used for surveying purposes. Other nearby peaks are Mount Humphreys, Table Mountain, Mount Schurz, Pinnacle Mountain, Turret Mountain and Colter Peak.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The mountain is fairly inaccessible, being a 15 mi hike from any of the park roads. From outside the park, the peak can be ascended by hiking up the Fish Hawk Creek valley, which is around 25 km one-way. It is also climbed from inside the park, by sailing to the southeasternmost tip of Yellowstone Lake, hiking down the Yellowstone River valley, and then turning to the east for the ascent.</p><br>
<h2>Wildlife</h2><br>
<p>Eagle Peak wildlife are in the alpine tundra zone and may be threatened by global climate change—the gradual shift of montane fauna and flora upwards could lead to the permanent loss of some species from the park. To the south, on the boundary of the park is Eagle Pass and the Thorofare Plateau, which has a population of elk, moose, deer, bear, bighorn sheep and others and lies along an important north-south migration route for the elk. Flora includes sedges and rushes, and tufted hairgrass in alpine meadows.</p><br>
<p>Tower Fall is a waterfall on Tower Creek in the northeastern region of Yellowstone National Park, in the USA state of Wyoming. Approximately 1,000 yd upstream from the creek&#39;s confluence with the Yellowstone River, the fall plunges 132 feet . Its name comes from the rock pinnacles at the top of the fall. Tower Creek and Tower Falls are located approximately three miles south of Roosevelt Junction on the Tower-Canyon road.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>On September 15–16, 1869, members of the Cook–Folsom–Peterson Expedition spent a whole day in the Tower Fall area before crossing the river and traveling up the East Fork of the Yellowstone (Lamar River).</p><br>
<p>In August 1870, the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition camped near and explored the Tower Fall area for several days en route to Yellowstone Lake. In his 1871 report to Secretary of War Gustavus C. Doane, a member of the expedition described Tower Falls thus:</p><br>
<p>The fall was named by Samuel Hauser, a member of the Washburn party. Hauser made this notation in his diary on August 27, 1870:</p><br>
<p>The fall was renamed Tower Fall (singular) by the USA Geological Survey in 1928.</p><br>
<p>A well-known painting by Thomas Moran in 1871 helped persuade Congress to set aside Yellowstone as the world&#39;s first national park in 1872.</p><br>
<h3>Images of Tower Fall</h3><br>
<p>The River Lod is a short river draining about 52 km&sup2; of north west Sussex. The source is on Marley Heights near Haslemere, about 140 metres above sea level. From here it flows west past Linchmere, then south to Furnace Pond, where iron cannon were cast during the English Civil War. It then turns south east, flowing south of Fernhurst to Lickfold and Lurgashall where it formerly powered Lurgashall Mill, now moved to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. From Mill Farm it heads south between high banks, which it only overflows after the heaviest of rainfalls, passing between the hills of Lodsworth and River to Halfway Bridge on the A272 road then joining the River Rother at Lods Bridge.</p><br>
<h2>North Park Furnace</h2><br>
<p>Iron was produced by a blast furnace on the boundary of Fernhurst and Linchmere parishes. Water to power the bellows was provided by an artificial lake covering about 2.5 hectares created by a dam on the river. There was also a higher pond 400 metres north-west of the furnace to provide a reserve supply as continuity of production is vital for a blast furnace.</p><br>
<h2>Lurgashall Mill</h2><br>
<p>Another artificial lake between Lurgashall and Lodsworth supplied water to power Lurgashall Mill, producing flour. The mill is now operated at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.</p><br>
<h2>Lords Wood Barns</h2><br>
<p>Formerly named Lodge Farm the old barns on the east bank of the river by Lords Wood were converted into offices for Sofa Workshop Company in 1996, saving the older barn from imminent collapse. The east pier of the bridge had sunk several centimetres before the bridge was underpinned and repaired at that time to carry the newly built road through the wood from the Lodsworth to Lickfold road. The Serpent Trail long distance path crosses the river here.</p><br>
<p>Lago di Mergozzo  is a small sub-alpine lake in northern Italy just to the west of Lago Maggiore and north of Lago d&#39;Orta, at the mouth of the Val d’Ossola in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola, Piedmont.</p><br>
<p>In ancient times it was the extreme point of the short northwestern arm of Lago Maggiore, formed by glaciation. However repeated flooding of Maggiore’s tributary the Toce deposited sediment which gradually formed a stretch of land which cut off Mergozzo from the larger expanse of water, and from the Toce itself. Today the settlement of Fondotoce (a frazione of Verbania) stands on this alluvial plain. The small town Mergozzo, which lies at the other end of the lake, gives it its name. The greater part of the lake falls within the commune of Mergozzo, the rest within Verbania.</p><br>
<p>Monte Orfano (790 m) rises from the south-west shore of the lake; the limestone rocks of which it is composed are heavily quarried. On the opposite side of the lake the mountains form the beginning of the Corni di Nibbio chain which divides the Val d’Ossola from the Valgrande and its National Park.</p><br>
<p>The lake is fed by the waters of a number of clean mountain streams, the two most important being the Rio Bracchio and the Rio Rescina. Its sole outlet is the 2.7 km canal which links it to Lago Maggiore near Fondotoce. The difference in levels between the two lakes is slight, and when Maggiore is in flood, the flow of water in the canal goes into reverse. This opens up the possibility of pollutants entering Lago Mergozzo. Nevertheless, today the lake, where the use of motor boats has long been forbidden, is one of the least polluted in Italy; it has become a tourist destination particularly popular with people from Germany and The Netherlands</p><br>
<h2>Fish</h2><br>
<p>Species found in the lake include, pikeperch, common whitefish, brown trout, Arctic char, bleak, chub, Danube roach (Rutilus pigus), common carp, rudd, tench, triotto (Rutilus aula), savetta, or Italian nase (Chondrostoma soetta), twait shad, northern pike, perch, black bass, pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus), eel and burbot.</p><br>
<p>Hen Domen Welsh, meaning "old mound", is the site of a medieval timber motte-and-bailey castle in Powys, Wales. It is the site of the original Montgomery Castle, and was built by Roger de Montgomery in 1070.</p><br>
<p>From 1105 the castle was the home of the de Boulers (Bowdler) family, and it is from Baldwin de Boulers that Montgomery gets its Welsh name, Trefaldwyn "The Town of Baldwin".</p><br>
<p>When the castle was rebuilt in stone (1223–1234), it was decided to rebuild it on a rocky promontory a mile to the south-east – the location of the current town of Montgomery, Powys.</p><br>
<p>The Hen Domen site has been extensively excavated.</p><br>
<p>There are permanent exhibitions relating to both the medieval Hen Domen and Norman Montgomery Castles and their archaeological excavations (with scale models of both castles) in The Old Bell Museum in Montgomery.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>Hen Domen lies on the western edge of the small village of Hendomen roughly 1.6 km northwest of the town of Montgomery, and 2 km west of Offa&#39;s Dyke. The castle was built on a low hill, only 0.7 km east of the Ford of Rhydwhymanan (an important shallow crossing of the River Severn), and offered good views of the Severn Valley to the north and west, and of the Vale of Montgomery to the east.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The site of the Hen Domen motte and bailey castle comprises a roughly oval area of 50 m by 40 m lying in a south-west to north-east direction. The site is surrounded by a roughly oval ditch with a depth of 2.7 m. The motte is in the south west corner and is 8 m high, and steeply sided with a flat summit with a diameter of 22 ft. The bailey occupies an area of roughly 1/3 acre.</p><br>
<p>Excavations from the 1960s until the 1990s have revealed traces of a series of grand and complex buildings including a towering timber building on the motte, connected by a bridge to the bailey with a large hall, 5 m by 6 m. Other evidence and remains include a wooden palisade which stood on the bailey defences, a wooden tower, a gatehouse, a granary and a possible chapel.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Hen Domen was built sometime soon after 1071 when Roger de Montgomery, the first Earl of Shrewsbury, was given extensive areas of Shropshire by William the Conqueror. Archaeological evidence suggests that it was completed before 1100. Roger de Montgomery named the castle Montgomery after the town in France where he came from.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The site can be viewed from a nearby lane off the B4385, but the site itself is on private land and can only be visited with the permission of the owner.</p><br>
<p>The Cloud or Bosley Cloud is a prominent hill on the border between Cheshire and Staffordshire a couple of miles west of the Peak District National Park boundary.</p><br>
<p>At 343 m in height, it is one of the highest hills in the area. Its heather-covered summit plateau is crowned by a trig point from which extensive views over Congleton, Biddulph, Macclesfield, Holmes Chapel, and the Greater Manchester area can be enjoyed.</p><br>
<p>The Cloud sits at the northern apex of a triangle formed by the broken ridge which runs along the border between Cheshire and Staffordshire and the hills stretching south through Biddulph Moor into Staffordshire. To its north, the River Dane wraps around its lower slopes whilst the A523 road runs to its east through the village of Bosley in Southeast Cheshire.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The summit and upper slopes are formed from the coarse and pebbly Chatsworth Grit, a thick sandstone which forms a part of the Millstone Grit and which dates from the Namurian stage of the Carboniferous period. The lower slopes are formed from mudstones which are not generally exposed. The hill owes its shape in part to the passage of ice around its flanks in successive ice ages.</p><br>
<h2>Access</h2><br>
<p>The summit and adjacent slopes of the hill are owned by the National Trust and so have been available for public access over many years, a situation reinforced by the additional pedestrian access measures provided by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Several public footpaths cross the hill and provide links with the network of minor roads which run around its lower slopes. The shared route of the Staffordshire Way and the Gritstone Trail recreational paths runs up to the summit from Timbersbrook en route for the Dane Valley.</p><br>
<h2>Double sunset</h2><br>
<p>The double sunset is a locally celebrated astro-geographical phenomenon, which was traditionally seen against The Cloud from the churchyard of Saint Edward the Confessor in Leek, in Staffordshire, on the summer solstice. In clear weather, the sun sets on the summit of the hill, partially reappears from The Clouds steep northern slope and soon afterwards sets for a second and final time on the horizon. The occurrence was first recorded in writing in 1686 by Dr Robert Plot in his book The Natural History Of Stafford-shire, and may well have been observed for centuries before then. The spectacle is no longer visible from its traditional observation point because of tree interference, but can still be witnessed on the summer solstice from Leek: from Lowe Hill, on the outskirts of the town, and from the road to Pickwood Hall, off Milltown Way. Better observation sites of the phenomenon are from the A523 above Rudyard Lake, and Woodhouse Green. Both of these events and their locations are described in detail in Jeff Kents book The Mysterious Double Sunset.</p><br>
<p>The České středohoří, Central Bohemian Uplands or Central Bohemian Highlands is a mountain range located in northern Bohemia, the Czech Republic. The range is about 80 km long, spanning from Česká Lípa  to Bílina  and from Litoměřice  to Děčín , intersected by the river Elbe. The mountains are of volcanic origin, with distinctively sharp solitary peaks.</p><br>
<p>The name středohoří can be translated into English as "middle mountains". However, the sense of the word "middle" in this context often misunderstood as being located in the middle of Bohemia. In fact the designation refers to moderate elevation of the mountains. The correct meaning is medium-sized Czech mountains. Another translation is "central uplands" (as opposed to "highlands"), the range being part of the European Central Uplands, hence Bohemian Central Uplands would be a reasonable description.</p><br>
<p>České středohoří is a nature reserve (Chráněná krajinná oblast (abbr. CHKO), and the D8 motorway connecting Prague and Dresden traverses the mountains. This led to a number of controversies, but despite them the motorway was after many delays finally completed in December 2016.</p><br>
<p>In the development of the game ARMA 2 data of this area was used to create the landscape for the game.</p><br>
<p>Mount Hakkyō is a 1,914.6 m mountain of Omine Mountains, which is located on the border of Tenkawa and Kamikitayama, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, Japan.</p><br>
<h2>Outline</h2><br>
<p>This mountain is the tallest mountain in Kansai Region including Nara Prefecture. This mountain is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.</p><br>
<p>The name of this mountain, ‘Hakkyo’, literally means ‘eight Buddhist scriptures’, derived from the legend which says a famous En no Gyōja, believed to be a founder of Shugendo, buried eight Buddhist scriptures on the top of this mountain.</p><br>
<p>This mountain is also called Hakken-zan, literally ‘mountain of eight swords’ or Bukkyō-ga-take, also literally ‘mountain of Buddhist scriptures’.</p><br>
<p>Sometimes, this mountain is mistaken as Mount Omine.</p><br>
<h2>Routes</h2><br>
<p>The mountain has several routes to the summit. The easiest is from Gyojamodori-Tunnel-Nishi-guchi, taking about three hours. The traditional route is from Tenkawa-Kawai, a seven-hour journey.</p><br>
<p>La Pedriza is a geological feature on the southern slopes of the Guadarrama mountain range of great scenic and leisure interest. Access is from Manzanares el Real, a municipality in the northwest of the Community of Madrid . Geological forces have created a remarkable boulder field of strangely eroded granitic outcrops, and nearly a thousand rock climbing routes of all difficulties are available to rock climbers. Hiking is also popular in La Pedriza, especially on weekends.</p><br>
<p>It is one of the largest granitic ranges of Europe and holds numerous peaks, rocky cliffs, streams and meadows. The 32 square kilometres occupied by La Pedriza lies within the Regional Park of the high river basin of Manzanares, the largest park of the Community of Madrid. In this zone, vegetation is sparse, but there are Mediterranean shrubs like the rockrose, and alpine varieties like fabaceaes. The fauna is rich in birds of prey; the breeding colony of over 100 pairs of griffon vultures is the largest in the Madrid area.</p><br>
<p>This natural area has been the scene of some movie shootings such as El Cid, or Conan the Barbarian.</p><br>
<p>Restrictions</p><br>
<p>In June 2016 new restrictions were introduced to protect the park. Swimming in the natural pools has been prohibited and there is a heavier restriction on access to the park. In the summer, until September 30, access to the carpark in Canto Cochino is restricted to 7.30-9.30am and 18.30-22.30 or until all spaces are filled (270). During June, July, August and September, no vehicle is permitted to be in the park overnight. From October 1 to May 31, entrance to the park is until 10.30am and after 4pm on weekends and bank holidays. There is no restriction on weekdays or exit restrictions.</p><br>
<p>Mount Miwa or Mount Mimoro is a mountain located in the city of Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, Japan. It has been an important religious and historical mountain in Japan, especially during its early history, and serves as a holy site in Shinto. The entire mountain is considered sacred, and is home to one of the earliest Shinto shrines, Ōmiwa Shrine. Several burial mounds from the Kofun period can be found around the mountain.</p><br>
<p>The kami generally associated with Mount Miwa is Ōmononushi (Ōmono-nushi-no-kami), a rain kami. However, the Nihon Shoki notes that there was a degree of uncertainly when it came to naming the principal kami of Mount Miwa, but he is often link to Ōkuninushi.</p><br>
<h2>Name</h2><br>
<p>Mount Miwa was first described in the Kojiki as Mount Mimoro (三諸山). Both names were in common use until the reign of Emperor Yūryaku, after which Miwa was preferred. Mimoro has been held to mean something like "august, beautiful" (mi) and "room", or "hall" (moro corruption of muro). The current kanji 三 (mi) and 輪 (wa) are purely phonetic. It has also been written 三和, another a phonetic spelling with the same pronunciation.</p><br>
<h2>Early religion</h2><br>
<p>Religious worship surrounding Mount Miwa has been deemed the oldest and more primitive of its kind in Japan, dating to pre-history. The very mountain itself is designated sacrosanct, and today&#39;s Ōmiwa Shrine still considers the mountain to be its shintai, or kami-body. The kami residing on Mount Miwa was judged the most powerful by the Fujiwara clan, and consequently palaces and roads were built in the vicinity.</p><br>
<h2>Pseudo-historical records</h2><br>
<h3>Installment of the Miwa (Ōmononushi) deity</h3><br>
<p>The Nihon Shoki, Book V, (Chronicle of Emperor Sujin, 10th emperor) records that when the country was crippled by pesitilence and subsequent mayhem, the emperor consulted the gods. The god Ōmononushi (whom some sources to the chronicle identify with the Mount Miwa deity) spoke through the mouth of an elder princess of the imperial house named (daughter of 7th emperor Emperor Kōrei and Sujin&#39;s aunt) and revealed himself to be the deity residing in the borders of Yamato on Mount Miwa, and promised to bring end to chaos if he were properly worshipped. The emperor propitiated to the god but the effects were not immediate. Later, the same god appeared in a dream to and instructed him to seek out a man named Ōtataneko, said to be the child of the god, and to install him as head priest of his cult. Subsequently, normal order was restored and crops no longer failed.</p><br>
<h3>Ōtataneko's genealogy and Miwa etymology</h3><br>
<p>The Nihon shoki records that the first priest of the shrine, Ōtataneko declares himself the son born between the god and Ikutama yori-hime (or Ikudama-yori-bime). However, in the Kojiki, Ōtataneko identifies himself as the great-grandson (Ōtataneko and Iku-tama-yori-bime begat Kushi-mikata, who begat Iikatasumi, who begat Takemikazuchi who begat the priest Ōtataneko).</p><br>
<p>Kojiki tells how it became known Ikutama yori-hime was divinely conceived. The beautiful girl was found to be pregnant, and claimed a handsome being had come to her at night. Her parents, in order to discover the identity of the man, instructed her to sprinkle red earth by her bedside, and thread a hemp cord (or skein) with a needle through the hem of his garment. In the morning, the hemp went through the hole of the door-hook so that only "three loops" (miwa) were left. They trailed the remaining hemp thread to the shrine in the mountain, and that was how they discovered the visitation was divine.</p><br>
<h3>Daughter of Ōmononushi of Miwa</h3><br>
<p>The Kojiki also records another divine birth from an earlier period (under Emperor Jimmu). It tells how a maiden named Seya-datara was squatting in the toilet when the god transformed into the shape of a red-painted arrow and poked her in her privates. In astonishment, she picked up the arrow and placed it by the floor, whereby it transformed into a fine youth, who wound up marrying her. The girl child then born was named Hoto-tatara-i-susuki-hime(or Hotota-tara-i-susugi-hime), hoto being an old word for a woman&#39;s private parts.</p><br>
<h3>Consort of the Miwa deity</h3><br>
<p>Book V in the Nihon Shoki, adds the following quaint episode. Suijin&#39;s aunt, the aforementioned Yamato-to-to-hi-momoso-hime, was later appointed the consort or wife of Ōmononushi (Mount Miwa). The kami however, would only appear to her at night, and the princess pleaded to reveal his true form. The kami warned her not to be shocked, and agreed to show himself inside her comb box (kushi-bako) or toiletry case. The next day she opened the box and discovered a magnificent snake inside. She shrieked out in surprise, whereby the deity transformed into human form, promised her payback for shaming him so, and took off to Mount Mimoro (Mount Miwa). The princess was so distraught at this, that she flopped herself on the seat stabbed herself in the pudenda with chopsticks, which ensued in her death. She is supposedly buried at one of the six mounds near Mount Miwa, the Hashihaka (lit. "chopstick-grave") mound. The Kojiki version of this myth describes a union between a woman from the Miwa clan and Ōmononushi, resulting in the birth of an early Yamato king. Scholars note that this is a clear effort to strengthen Yamato authority by identifying and linking their lineage to the established worship surrounding Mount Miwa.</p><br>
<h3>Emperor Yūryaku</h3><br>
<p>In Nihon Shoki, Book XIV, under Emperor Yūryaku year 7 (purportedly 463 A.D.), it is recorded that the emperor expressed the desire to get a glimpse of the deity of Mount Mimoro (Mount Miwa) and ordered a man known for his brute strength, named Chiisakobe Sugaru to go capture it. (A scholium in the codices writes the identity of the god of this mountain is said to by Ōmononushi by some sources, and Uda-no-sumisaka). Sugaru thereby climbed the mountain and captured and presented it to the emperor. But Yūryaku neglected to purify himself (by religious fasting, etc.) so that the great serpent made thunderous noise and made its eyes glare. The frightened emperor retreated to the palace, and had the snake released in the hill. He gave the hill a new name, Ikazuchi (lit. "thunderbolt").</p><br>
<h3>Emishi</h3><br>
<p>Records say that Yamato Takeru&#39;s sword Kusanagi was later placed in the keeping of the Atsuta Shrine, and that Takeru also presented a number of Emishi ("barbarians") hostages he quelled to the same shrine. The priestess however found them rowdy and mannerless, and so she handed them over to the imperial court. The court settled them around the Mount Miwa area at first, but they would chopped down its trees, or make great hollers and frightened the villages. So their numbers were scattered and settled in five provinces, and they became the ancestors of the Saeki clans (Recorded in Nihongi Book VII, Emperor Keikō year 51 (purportedly 121 A.D.).</p><br>
<p>Much later in time, during Emperor Bidatsu year 10 (581 A.D.), Nihon Shoki, Book XX), the Emishi were harassing the borderlands. The emperor summoned their leader named Ayakasu, and threatened the ringleaders of the ruffians with death. Whereby Ayakasu and the others entered Hatsuse-gawa (upper stream of Yamato River, sipped its water, and facing towards Mount Mimoro (Mt. Miwa), swore allegiance unto their descendants to the Yamato court.</p><br>
<h2>Archaeology</h2><br>
<p>Yamato leaders often ruled from palaces near sacred mountains, and built burial mounds around them, as it was a prominent sanctuary for both locals and Yamato kings alike.</p><br>
<p>Six tumuli have been found in the Shiki area at the base of Mount Miwa. These earthen mounds were built between 250 AD to 350 AD, and all display the same keyhole shape and stone chambers found in earlier mounds. However, the tumuli found at Mount Miwa hint at the beginning of a more centralized Yamato state. All six mounds are exceptionally large, twice as large as any similar mounds found in Korea, and contain prolific amounts of mirrors, weapons, ornaments, as well as finely built wood and bamboo coffins.</p><br>

<p>Hall Island is a small island located 3.5 mi to the northwest of St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea in Alaska, United States. It serves as a haulout site for Pacific walrus. It is 5 mi in length and has a land area of 6.1758 square miles. The highest point is 1,610 ft. Hall Island is uninhabited. It is part of the Bering Sea unit of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. It is one of three hall islands.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Early Russian hunters knew this island as "Ostrov Morzhovoy" (&#39;Walrus Island&#39;) (Tevenkov, 1852, mpa 20). The Imperial Russian Hydrographic Department Chart 1427 called it "Ostrov Sindsha" probably for Lt. Sind, its alleged discoverer, in 1764.</p><br>
<p>Commodore Joseph Billings of the Imperial Russian Navy and Lt. Gavril Sarychev anchored between this island and St. Matthew on July 14, 1791 (O.S.). Since 1875, this island has been called "Hall" on American maps, presumably for Lt. Robert Hall, who was with Captain Billings, or also for Cape Hall.</p><br>

<p>Lake Kutubu is a lake in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. It lies to the east of the Kikori River, into which it eventually drains. It is about 50 km southwest of Mendi, the provincial capital. It is one of the few lakes in the country that occurs in a depression in the rugged interior mountains. It is the second-largest lake in Papua New Guinea, after Lake Murray, and, at 800 m above sea level, The area of the lake is 49.24 km²,</p><br>
<p>The lake has a few islands, the largest of which is Wasemi Island in its northern part. The water of Lake Kutubu is clear, and the lake reaches a depth of 70 m (230 feet). It is fed by several streams, most of its contents come from underground sources. The catchment is inhabited by two main ethnic groups, the Foe to the south and the Fasu to the north. Thirty-three villages lie in the catchment area, with a total estimated population of 10,885.</p><br>
<p>The lake gave its name to the nearby Kutubu Oil Project, Papua New Guinea&#39;s first commercial oilfield development, operated by Oil Search Limited, and which began production in 1992. The development has supported the local economy, and caused a general in-migration to the area, and ecological problems resulting from rapid population growth, including pollution, forest destruction and overfishing. A proposed gas pipeline and road are expected to exacerbate these problems unless they are well-managed.</p><br>

<p>Lake Kutubu includes 13 endemic fish species, making it the most unusual lacustrine habitat for fishes in the New Guinea-Australia region.</p><br>

<h2>Conservation</h2><br>
<p>Because of its biodiversity and ecological significance, the area has been designated a "Wetland of International Significance" by the Ramsar Convention. The area is undergoing study by the World Wildlife Fund and the drafting of a catchment management plan has commenced, which is anticipated to become a model for other catchments in Papua New Guinea. The project is to be completed by December 2007. The Lake Kutubu area is also included in the tentatively listed Kikori River Basin - Great Papuan Plateau World Heritage Site.</p><br>
<p>Nesbitt Reservoir is located on Pennsylvania Route 502 in Spring Brook Township, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The reservoir is managed and protected by the Pennsylvania American Water Company . It provides a fresh water supply to approximately 75,000 area residents and is situated on Spring Brook, the second-largest tributary to the Lackawanna River. Spring Brook begins near Yostville, Pennsylvania and flows 17 mi to its confluence with the Lackawanna River in Moosic, Pennsylvania. The watershed of Spring Brook watershed has nine named tributaries of its own, counting subtributaries.</p><br>
<p>In 2012 Pennsylvania American Water completed improvements costing $27.4 million to the dam which contains the 1.3 billion-gallon reservoir.</p><br>
<p>Whitewater rafting is done from the reservoir to Moosic. It is a medium difficult level for paddling for those who are not ready for the roaring rapids but not quite a beginner.</p><br>
<p>It is no longer accessible to the public since the reservoir was purchased from PAWC. Before that time, there was a nature trail that included sights of creeks, the stream, falls, deer and other small animals of nature.</p><br>

<p>The New Gaol  is in Cumberland Road, Spike Island, Bristol, England, near Bristol Harbour.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The original New Gaol was designed by Henry Hake Seward and opened in 1820. In 1831, it was destroyed during the Bristol Riots and was rebuilt to designs by Richard Shackleton Pope, but was never properly completed until 1872. The gaol was closed in 1883 due to poor conditions and was largely demolished in 1898. In 1884, Horfield Prison was built to replace it.</p><br>
<p>In 1821, three days after his eighteenth birthday, John Horwood was the first person to be hanged at the Gaol for murdering Eliza Balsum by hurling a pebble at her which hit her on the right temple and she then tumbled into a brook.</p><br>
<p>English Heritage designated The Gaol entrance wall and gateway and the south-east perimeter wall as a Grade II listed building. It is now the centre-piece of a redevelopment project in this area of the city.</p><br>

<p>Mount McKay is a mafic sill located south of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, on the Indian Reserve of the Fort William First Nation. It is the highest, most northern and best known of the Nor&#39;Wester Mountains. It formed during a period of magmatic activity associated with the large Midcontinent Rift System about 1,100 million years ago.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>McKay was originally known as the "Thunder Mountain" (Animikii-wajiw in the Ojibwe language and locally written as "Anemki-waucheu"). The mountain is used by the Ojibwe for sacred ceremonies. Only with the construction of the road were non-First Nations allowed on this land.</p><br>
<p>The current English name "Mount McKay", evolved from "Mackays Mountain" and later, "McKays Mountain", after William Mackay, a Scottish free trader who resided in the Fort William area sometime between 1821 and 1857.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>Mount McKay is 270 m above Lake Superior and 442 m above sea level.</p><br>
<p>Mount McKay is composed of shale and greywackes &ndash; the Rove Formation &ndash; which is covered by the hard, protective 60 m thick diabase cap. The Rove Formation is part of the Animikie Group. The Rove sedimentary layers in the Nor&#39;Wester Mountains are overlain by a 60 m cap of diabase; this Logan diabase is 1115 ± 1 million years old. This diabase cap is the erosional remnant of a sill that once extended over the entire area. Most of it is covered by a thick layer of mineral soil.</p><br>
<p>The north face of Mount McKay shows evidence that below this cap is another 7.2 m thick sill of very hard diabase. This sill is also an erosional remnant and is 96 m below the first cap and 190 m below the top of the hill &ndash; or 242 m above sea level.</p><br>
<h2>Features</h2><br>
<p>A lookout exists on the lower eastern plateau at an elevation of 300 m, providing a view of Thunder Bay and the city&#39;s harbour. A small memorial commemorates Aboriginal people that fought in wars. There is a path on the eastern face of the mountain that can be used for hiking. Plants on the mountain include red and sugar maple and poison ivy (animikiibag—"thunder-leaf" in the Ojibwe language). The top of the mountain has glacial erratics and jack pines. A small grove of yellow birch grows just south of the entrance gate.</p><br>
<p>A small, unmaintained trail can be used to reach the top from the lookout via the north face, with a heavy gauge steel cable that can be used for support. However, due to the grade and geology (mostly shale) of the face, this unsanctioned hike is considered dangerous, and is not recommended for novice hikers.</p><br>
<p>There is also somewhat of a trail on the west side of the mountain. Shale is predominant in this area, making the western climb considerably less dangerous than the north face.</p><br>
<p>The Former Everard&#39;s Printing Works is at 37-38 Broad Street in Bristol, England. It has been designated as a Grade II* listed building.</p><br>
<p>It was built in 1900 by Henry Williams, with the Pre-Raphaelite art nouveau style facade by William Neatby, who was the chief designer for Doulton and Co., as the main works for the printer Edward Everard. It has a triple archway design on the ground floor with two on the first floor and four on the upper floor. Above them is a female figure symbolising Light and Truth. The arches were to reflect the Church of St John the Baptist a little further along Broad Street.</p><br>
<p>Most the red brick building was demolished in 1970 but the arts and crafts facade was preserved as it is the largest decorative Carrara marble tile facade of its kind in Britain. Behind each figure are typefaces representing their work. After the demolition of the rest of the building the facade was incorporated into a new building which is used as offices by the NatWest bank.</p><br>
